PRESIDENT PLANS TO CREATE A STATE-OWNED COMPANY FOR THE METAL USED IN ELECTRIC CARS<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Shares of some of the world\u2019s biggest lithium mining companies traded sharply lower on Friday after Chilean President\u00a0Gabriel Boric\u00a0unveiled a new state-led strategy to develop its vast resources of the metal, which is vital for the development of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n

Mr. Boric, a leftist former student protest leader who took office last year, announced late Thursday plans to create a state-owned lithium company to develop\u00a0Chile\u2019s lithium resources<\/a>, a key campaign promise. In a televised address, Mr. Boric said the state would take a majority stake in partnerships with private companies to develop lithium.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe state will participate in the entire productive process of the mineral,\u201d Mr. Boric said. \u201cThis is the best chance that we have to transition to a sustainable and developed economy. We don\u2019t have the luxury to waste it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shares of\u00a0Sociedad Qu\u00edmica y Minera de Chile<\/a>\u00a0SQM\u00a0-1.44%<\/span>decrease; red down pointing triangle<\/span><\/span><\/a>, one of the world\u2019s top lithium producers, and partially owned by China\u2019s\u00a0Tianqi Lithium<\/a>\u00a0Corp., fell Friday nearly 19% in New York.\u00a0U.S.-based\u00a0Albemarle<\/a>\u00a0Corp.,\u00a0ALB\u00a0-3.97%<\/span>decrease; red down pointing triangle<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0the only other producer in Chile, was down 10%. Both companies extract lithium from salty brines located under Chile\u2019s northern Atacama salt flat.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for SQM declined to comment. Albemarle said it expects \u201cno material impact\u201d on its operations as the government will respect existing mine contracts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to collaborate with the government of Chile regarding the proposed national lithium strategy,\u201d it said. \u201cWe have many shared interests to include how best to grow the lithium market and deploy new sustainable technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rony Zimerman, a mine lawyer in Santiago who has represented lithium miners in Chile, said Mr. Boric\u2019s state-led lithium proposal could still be attractive for foreign investors looking to tap in to Chile\u2019s deposits.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI think companies will start calling Codelco and Enami today and asking, \u2018How do we do this?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThe final conditions may be attractive for a company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Boric\u2019s policy will require approval in Congress, where he has struggled to approve legislation since last year\u2019s\u00a0rejection of a new constitution<\/a>\u00a0that he backed and that would have ramped up the state\u2019s role in the economy.<\/p>\n

Juan Ignacio Guzman, a mining expert at Chile\u2019s Catholic University, said he expects Mr. Boric will struggle to win approval in Congress for his lithium proposals. He said those proposals would further erode Chile\u2019s competitiveness and undercut future production.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople in general do not want the state to be in charge of business in Chile, but to effectively manage the wealth created by private companies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
